CO poisoning hospitalization rates in Minnesota by year

The rate of hospitalizations for CO poisoning varies from year to year. Between 2007 and 2009, Minnesota began implementing a law requiring CO alarms in all single-family homes and multi-dwelling buildings. CO poisonings hospitalizations have increased recently, with the highest rate occurring in 2024.

    CO poisoning hospitalizations by age and sex

    Carbon monoxide poisoning hospitalizations increase with age for both sexes. Men are hospitalized at a greater rate than women in every age category. This could be due to occupational hazards, recreational activities, or tool usage that puts them more at risk of exposure. Males may be at higher risk for carbon monoxide poisoning because their bodies often take longer to remove carbon monoxide from the blood than females. Older adults are at greater risk of severe illness from carbon monoxide poisoning because aging and underlying health conditions can make it harder for the body to cope with reduced oxygen levels.

      This graph shows the total number of CO poisoning hospitalizations by month. Non-fire related, unintentional CO poisoning hospitalizations follow a seasonal pattern, with more admissions in the fall and winter and fewer admissions in the spring and summer. This trend reflects the higher use of fuel-burning devices during colder weather.
