Minnesotans living near busy roads by census tract (2019-2023)

In about half of Minnesota's 1,505 census tracts, less than 20 percent of residents live near busy roads. Highest rates of traffic exposure, where more than 60% of residents live near busy roads, impact about 13 percent of Minnesota census tracts. Most of these tracts are located in the 7-county metro.

    Minnesotans living near busy roads in environmental justice areas by region (2019-2023)

    Almost 40% of Minnesotans living near busy roads also live in census tracts that are considered environmental justice (EJ) areas. There are slightly more Minnesotans living near busy roads in EJ areas in greater Minnesota than in the 7-county metro.

There is a greater percentage of the census tract population living near busy roads in the 7-county metro area than greater Minnesota. This means that most Minnesotan's living near busy roads are in the 7-county metro area; however, there are some areas in larger cities throughout the state that also have more Minnesotans living near busy roads.
