Asthma hospitalization data are extracted from Minnesota Hospital Discharge Data (MNHDD), which is maintained by the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA). MHA represents Minnesota's hospitals and health systems. Hospitals submit inpatient discharge data to MHA using a standardized billing form. In 2021, 90% of all hospitals in the state reported hospital discharge data to the MHA. MHA began data-sharing agreements with several states in 2005. Hospitalizations are defined as Minnesota residents who are discharged from a hospital in Minnesota.

Asthma hospitalizations rates in Minnesota

Asthma-associated hospitalization rates have gradually declined since 2016; a drop was observed in 2020, potentially associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

      Asthma-associated hospitalization rates have been in decline for children residing in the Twin Cities Metro area or Greater Minnesota since 2016. However, hospitalization rates among children residing in the Twin Cities metro area are consistently greater than those in children residing in Greater Minnesota. Asthma-associated hospitalization rates for adults are generally similar.

        Asthma-associated hospitalization rates typically decrease during childhood through middle-aged adulthood and gradually increases in older age, with the highest rates observed among young children. Among children, asthma-associated hospitalization rates tend to be higher among males, whereas in adults, higher rates are observed among females.
